The baby registry, or "What do you want for your child?"

Smileycue and I have been making slow progress on the registry for BabyCue. There are several reasons for this. One is my procrastination. Two is figuring out what we "need" versus what we "want." Three is figuring out how to say, "Could you please buy [BABY THING] because we want/need it, but please buy used."

To help us as we work through our registry decisions, we invite you, readers of BabyCue, to help us by answering these questions three in the comments:
  1. What thing(s) did you find most useful for you baby?
  2. What was the least useful thing you had for your baby?
  3. What thing(s) did you wish you had for your baby?
  4. If you had another baby, what thing(s) would you get this time?

useful things
1) a car seat base that stays in the car. it's much easier to click the seat in and out and the seat is great to take with you (to a restaurant, church, friend's house, etc) especially when it's cold.
2) a decent breast pump if you're going to be doing bottles (avent manual is what i use, along with all avent bottles)
3) baby clothes with easy snaps and closures - those outfits that take a lot of time to take on and off aren't worth it
4) fisher price light-up aquarium - it attaches to the crib and can do white noise or ocean sounds or music. as we travel a lot, the aquarium went everywhere with and no matter where our kids slept they also had the same music/white noise to comfort them. both used it for two years
5) a pack 'n play with bassinet thing - again - we travel a lot and we actually used this instead of a crib for the first 4 months
6) although bulky, a baby bath is nice to keep baby's head supported and keep him from slipping, otherwise it takes two adults to bathe an infant as he'll slip in the tub
--as far as not useful:
1) the sidewalks here are terrible so we used a sling/ front pack carrier instead until the kid was old enough to sit in a regular stroller. the ones that lay down, etc, are huge and take up the entire trunk space of a car so if you get one you'll have to buy a second smaller stroller for other trips. however, you can usually find a bulky lay-down one at a garage sale cheap - we have a top quality 'chicco' umbrella stroller that folds small but is durable and tall enough abu tulip can use it - the cheapo ones are too short
2) we didn't use a swing often, or one of those jumpy things you can attach in a door frame - kids didn't get into them
3) you don't need one of those weird nursing rings - a blanket works find once you get the hang of it
4) we're not buying anything new, except a few blankets and washcloths as the old ones are getting worn -
ummm - that's long enough for now, happy shopping
ps - we also had a 'dimmer' switch in our bedroom when we lived in the us - that was cool b/c you could have the light dim for middle of the night feedings

One thing they have now is the big 3 wheel strollers. All we had was the little umbrella strollers with the plastic wheels and they were ok for you cause I could just carry it and set it down where I wanted it but for your sister when you tried to "help" well- you may have wondered what has been wrong with herr all these years well- the number of times I had to rescue both of you crying loudly because the front tires had gotten caught in a rock or the mud and she was there hanging upside down and you were there trying to get her back upright:)
The other thing that I could not have kept my sanity without was the swing. You were my constantly crying baby and the only time you would be quiet was when you were in the swing. Usually in front of PBS watching the colors change and listening to the music. I could go out and chore and pretty much be assured you would still be happy when I got back to the house if you were in the swing.

Useful things...
1. Crib aquarium. LOVE that thing!
2. Halo sleepsacks instead of blankets. After the swaddling stage, they keep baby covered without getting tangled up on their heads.
3. Cloth diapers for use as drool rags, urp rags, butt wipes if there's diaper rash (baby wipes irritate bad diaper rash), etc.
4. NOT a travel system stroller, but a really good stroller. Get a decent "bucket" carseat with a base for each car...most of them (like the Graco Snugride, which we loved) will strap into most good strollers (we like the Peg Perego Pliko P3).
5. Robeez shoes.
6. Lots of simple sleepers. Buy one or two "cutesy" outfits for early on and have the rest be comfy, simple, washable. We were not fans of those "gowns" since our kids got them wadded up around their waists.
7. Best teether ever: the Sophie rubber giraffe from France. It's on Amazon. Worth every penny!
8. We wish we would not have wasted $$ on a diaper pail. If it's really stinky, you don't want to let it hang around in any kind of pail. Use a regular kitchen lidded trash can and just take the stinkies out each day!
